How to Make Cold Brew - Sweetened Iced Coffee // www.thelovelythings.com

I’m a big fan of iced cappuccinos and now after a year of drinking real coffee (not just sugar/flavor shot filled drinks from Starbucks) I’m loving iced coffees too!

I had heard a lot about cold brews this year so my home barista husband and I decided to give it a try making our own. And lucky for me he doesn’t like cold coffee drinks so I don’t even have to share ;)

So first of all I learned that cold brew and iced coffee are actually two completely different things. Who knew. Iced coffee is just normal (hot) brewed coffee that is then poured over ice to make it cold. Cold brew is a different process entirely and the end result is more of a coffee concentrate that you can use to make different cold drinks. So now we both know :)

If you search the internet for how to make it you’ll have about a billion results with a bunch of different methods that people do. I’ve decided that you just have to pick the one that works with what you already have or with the amount of effort you want to put into it.

You can also make it stronger or weaker by changing the water to coffee ratio, but we did an 8:1 and found it was good for us. It wasn’t insanely strong which meant that I didn’t have to dilute it too much to make a tasty drink for me.

Okay, so heres what we did!

Cold brew (full immersion method)

  • 6 cups of water
  • 170 grams of coffee beans, ground coarsely
  • 2 large glass jars (enough to hold the 6 cups of water)
  • paper coffee filter
  • pour over cone or funnel

Grind beans coarsely like you would for a french press. About the size of kosher salt.

Pour into a large jar and add all the water. Stir gently so all the grinds are wet.

Cover with plastic wrap and let sit in the fridge, untouched, for minimum 12 hours or up to 24 hours.

When the time is up pour it through a paper filter into the second jar.

Now it’s ready to use!

As I said, you can make a bunch of different drinks with it depending on what you like. If you’re a latte person then you might like it mixed with milk or almond milk. If you like simple iced coffee then fill a glass with ice and do a 2:3 ration of cold brew and water.

I like sweet and creamy drinks so I like it Vietnamese style. Mmmm

Fill a glass with ice and pour in enough cold brew to almost fill it. Then add a teaspoon of sweetened condensed milk and stir until it’s completely mixed in.

Sometimes I’ll add a splash of milk to and I’ve heard of some people adding cinnamon too if that’s your thing.
