30 Before 30 List //

Time for another 30 Before 30 update! If you’re checking things out for the first time you can find my last update here and the original list here.

Quick recap is that back in January I turned 29 (not 30 like lots of people assumed… c’mon guys, let me have the last year of my 20’s!) and I made a 30 before 30 list – 30 things I want to do by my 30th birthday.

I’ve slowly been working my way through them and for some reason just have appearance related updates this time around. Oops. Maybe I’ll work on some less self-involved things over the next couple of months ;)

Okay, so first up I got a haircut!

NBD, right? But really, this was big for me. I’ve basically had the same hairstyle forever and I’m definitely the “just a trim please” girl at the salon. So I thought a good/big change for me would be to get bangs. WHAT. I was a little scared that I would look like a 12 year old, but whatevs. You don’t know until you try right? And if it sucked I would just cry and complain until they grew out ;)

Well, I’m happy to report that I went for it and a week later there’s no regrets and no tears! I’ve styled it a bunch of different ways too and I’m still happy about this decision.

I went to my favorite salon, The Loft Ottawa, where the ever lovely Ashley worked her magic on my tresses. If you’re in Ottawa I highly recommend booking your next salon or aesthetics appointment with them! They have a gorgeous space, wine or lattes while you wait (for real!), and great people. Before and After hair style //

Next up: makeup. See? I told you this would be all about looks.

I believe my exact words were “master that red lip/black eyeliner thing”. I can definitely tell you that I have 100% not mastered either of those things yet, but I have gotten over the fear of using, and wearing, both! Which I think was really my point anyway so I’m counting that as accomplished.

I stood in the makeup aisle of Shopper’s for a long time staring at all the liquid eyeliners before finally deciding on L’Oreal’s Voluminous Superstar Liquid Eyeliner. I’m pretty sure I chose it because it was around $10 and looked easy enough for a first timer like me to use.

I’ve learned that the best way for me to put it on is by starting at the outside of my eye and drawing a quick, straight line up to my lash line. Once I have that I add to it from the outside in, but let it slowly fade to a thin line just before I reach the inner corner of my eye. Usually I have to go over it lightly in spots to fill in spots or make it more even.

Because I have such fair skin and blonde lashes I also use a black eye pencil to fill in my lash line on the inside so I don’t have a space.

As I said, I’m no expert and I’ve never done a successful winged line yet (at least not evenly on both eyes – is that even possible??), but it’s been fun to switch things up and hopefully one day I will get the perfect line(s).

Part 2: red lips.

Again, I stood in Shopper’s looking at endless tubes of reds and eventually landed on Maybelline’s Color Sensational in Red Revolution.

It seemed like just the right shade between orangey-red and pinky-red, but once I got home and put it on: WOAH. Fuchsia overload! Although, looking on their website now it totally looks more pink than red. I probably should’ve went with Very Cherry or one of those ones. Anyway, over a couple months of not really touching it and then randomly trying it out again it kind of grew on me. I think the biggest thing was to get used to color. Any color.

I’m wearing it in my hair before/after a couple photos up and now, looking at that, I think I’m okay with it.

I used to wearing colored lipglosses and tints, but somewhere over the years I slowly stopped and only used lipchap and Vaseline (I still say it’s the best lip moisturizer + gloss out there). Maybe I should’ve eased into color a little slower then zero to bright pink, but at least it helped me get used to color quickly haha.

I was telling my bff  this lipstick dilemma (did I mention I have the best friends that actually listen to my stories like this?) and she told me about one that had been recommedned to her and now she’s in love with, NYX Soft Matte Lip CreamIt comes in tons of colors and shades and is only $9! It stays matte which is awesome and has a wand applicator that I find a lot easier to put on quickly.

I went with ‘Ibiza’, a deep rose pink that was a bit subtler than my previous lipstick choice (wearing it in the photo above). And now I want more! There’s a deep red one (‘Amsterdam’ I think) that’s on my list to get now too….

Do you have any eye/lip makeup brands that you can’t live without? I’d love to hear about them in the comments below!
