A few posts ago I shared my first knitting project, this chunky blanket! And now I will show you how I made those huge tassels for it.
What you’ll need:
- bulky yarn (1 large skein of this yarn made 8 tassels for me)
- 5×7″ piece of cardboard
What you do:
Hold the cardboard lengthwise and wrap the yarn around it 25 times. You can wrap it more or less times, but that will change the fullness of the tassel.
Cut the yarn at the end of the last wrap. Cut another piece of yarn about 6″ and slide it under the wrapped ones. Tie a knot tightly at the top and then cut through all the yarn at the opposite end.
Gather the tassel together near the top and tie another piece of yarn around it to form a ball. Tie it tightly in a knot and then cut it the same the length as the rest of the tassel so it blends in.
If you want a different look you can tie off a second section to make it look like this.
Gather the cut ends together and trim so the yarn is even across. If you want a fluffier look like this then separate each yarn strand a bit with your fingers and fluff them up individually.
To add them to my blanket I just tied the 2 loose ends at the top to the blanket and wove the ends into the knitting. Done!
There’s a bunch of other yarn tassel DIYs out there like adding tassels to store bought blankets, making garlands, gift wrap, and pillows. Basically, they’re kind of addicting to make once you get started and you’ll want to put them on everything ;)
If you tried it for yourself comment below so I can check it out! I’d love to see the different ways people use these guys. Happy crafting!
